Outpatient Programs at River Oaks: What to Expect
Psychotherapy
Offered in a one-on-one setting or in a group, psychotherapy counseling is led by trained professionals, who use different therapeutic approaches to address and treat dysfunctional emotional reactions, thoughts, and behaviors.
Therapies utilized in the PHP and IOP at River Oaks include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI).
Group Therapy
The majority of outpatient therapy sessions take place in group settings, which allow you to share your experiences and learn various relapse preventions skills in a nonjudgmental, peer-supported atmosphere. These peer relationships can be beneficial in recovery, helping you feel less isolated and allowing you to glean from the experiences of others, who share similar life experiences.
At River Oaks, outpatient treatment varies somewhat by the program type. PHPs typically involve curriculum groups, process groups, recovery groups, and focus groups. IOPs mainly involve curriculum and process groups.
Curriculum groups are psychoeducational sessions that address various aspects of substance use and its impact on the mind, body, and family/loved ones. These groups teach you to modify negative thoughts and behavior patterns and help you develop more productive coping skills.
Process groups are smaller and typically allow you to explore more intense, personal issues, like relationship issues or early life experiences. At River Oaks, these groups might be broken into a men’s, women’s, or coed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups, depending on the day. DBT combines different techniques to help you develop mindfulness habits, healthy coping mechanisms for stress, emotional regulation skills, and more.
