Can You Have Your Phone in Rehab? (Cell Phone Rules and FAQs)
Every rehab center sets its own policy on cell phones and electronic devices. Often, these devices will be allowed, though the time they can be used may be restricted.
This article will answer your questions on cell phone use in rehab.
Are Cell Phones Allowed in Rehab?
It’s common for treatment facilities may prohibit patients from cell phone use for the first few days in treatment. Once this time period is over, their cell phone privileges will resume.
Typically, there are designated times outside of treatment when patients are allowed to use their phones.
Before beginning treatment, be sure to review a list of approved and prohibited items provided by the facility or call to learn what is and isn’t allowed.
What If I Don’t Have My Own Cell Phone?
You may be able to use the facility phone or a designated pay phone within the facility to call your loved ones. Call ahead to confirm the rules for calling home and loved ones. Other alternatives to contacting your loved ones may be letters or virtual Skype calls as well.
Should I Limit My Cell Phone Use in Rehab?
Because going to rehab and receiving treatment is a critical time that will require focus and perseverance, a call home or to a loved one may be able to help someone through rehab. Despite the seemingly positive influence of being in touch with a loved one, it may also become a distraction from the treatment program. The impact, either positive or negative, will of course depend on the individual.
Do Rehabs Have Internet Access and WiFi?
This may depend on the rehab facility. To mitigate distractions, internet use may be regulated or restricted, allowing patients to better focus on their recovery.
American Addiction Centers Cell Phone Rules
American Addiction Centers (AAC) has drug and alcohol rehabs and detox centers across the United States. Each rehab facility sets their own rules for electronics and cell phone use so call ahead to confirm the rules.
Generally, cell phones are placed on a 3-day therapeutic hold when entering the facility, and returned to the patient on the 4th day after 5 p.m.
In some cases, staff may place additional restrictions on electronic devices depending on program recommendations, the patient’s progress, or behavioral concerns. Taking photos or videos is a violation of patient privacy and is expressly forbidden at all AAC treatment centers.
