What Is Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Georgia?

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Georgia is a healthcare provider that offers employer plans, Medicare plans, Medicaid plans, and more.1 Like most health insurance companies, Anthem BCBS of Georgia may offer full or partial coverage for mental health and substance use treatment.

If you’re looking for rehab in Georgia, you’re not alone. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a single-day count in Georgia in March 2019 showed that 23,465 people were enrolled in a substance use disorder treatment program.2 Here, we’ll explore what you can expect from your Anthem insurance plan if you’re ready to begin treatment for substance use disorders in the state of Georgia.

BCBS Coverage Levels and Plans

The three main types of insurance plans offered by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield are:3

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO): HMO plans offer the lowest monthly premiums and require referrals to see specialists. In-network providers and emergency visits are covered.
  • Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPO): This type of health insurance plan offers mid-level monthly premiums, does not require a referral to see a specialist, and covers both in-network provider visits and emergency visits.
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO): While this level of care requires a higher monthly premium than HMOs or EPOs, you do not need a referral to see a specialist, and both in-network and out-of-network care are covered (out-of-network costs more).

Anthem BCBS also offers Medicare Advantage plans in Georgia to augment Medicare coverage for things such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing, and widens the network of approved health providers for people with Medicare.4

What Addiction Treatment Does Anthem BCBS of Georgia Cover?

Rehab programs that may be covered by your BCBS plan include:7

  • Detoxification: Also known as withdrawal management, detoxification offers medical supervision as your body and mind prepare for entry into an inpatient or outpatient drug or alcohol rehab program.
  • Inpatient or residential treatment: This type of care offers 24/7 treatment. You’ll stay at the facility for days or weeks, receiving around-the-clock therapy and care to support your sobriety after you leave treatment.
  • Outpatient rehab treatment: A less intense level of care, outpatient treatment involves attending appointments for drug and alcohol treatment while still living at home. Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) offer a high level of care in which patients attend treatment each day, going through many of the same therapies as people in inpatient care. Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) offer a similar level of treatment to PHPs while requiring you to attend sessions for several hours a few times each week.
  • Medications for substance use disorder: Your treatment provider may prescribe medications that may control substance cravings in combination with behavioral therapy services.

Depending on the details of your insurance policy, you may have to obtain prior authorization to verify the treatment course is considered medically necessary.8,9 This approval process is typically done to ensure the type of treatment prescribed meets the accepted standards of medicine and is necessary for the patient’s health.

Does Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Georgia Cover Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?

Yes. Like addiction treatment, mental illness treatment coverage is mandated under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and MHPAEA.5

Many people who are living with addiction are also living with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health issues. When mental health conditions such as these occur simultaneously with substance use disorder this is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. Receiving treatment for both conditions at the same time is key for lasting recovery.10
