Karah Moody, lead therapist overseeing the LGBTQ+ treatment track at River Oaks Treatment Center, was recently featured in LGBTQ Nation discussing the nuanced needs of transgender individuals seeking treatment for addiction.

Rates of substance use disorder ranges between 25 and 40% for those who are transgender, a figure much higher than the general population and the LGBTQ community due to the trauma and challenges these people face for just existing. Compounding the issue are barriers to healthcare, a lack of acceptance from society or even their own families, and an increasingly volatile climate in which they face ongoing harassment, discrimination and violence.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available for transgender individuals that are safe, supportive, accommodating and conducive to long-term recovery.
